PTIN Renewals are Overdue! The IRS Return Preparer Office has begun sending PTIN expiration notices to tax professionals who have not renewed their PTINs. Notices will go to approximately 150,000 PTIN holders.
According to the IRS, preparer tax identification number (PTIN) applications and renewals for 2016 are still being processed, but anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation must have a valid 2016 PTIN before preparing returns. Renew your PTIN on the IRS website, here.
All enrolled agents are required to have a PTIN, whether they file returns for compensation or not.
